Yamaha has reported sales for its first quarter ended March 31, 2009, a 35.5 % decrease compared to the same period a year ago. A company statement said the drop in sales was due to decreased sales in most of its business segments and regions. The company reported a net loss of 15.8bn for the quarter.

Sales in its Marine products division fell by 42% compared to the same period a year ago, an operating loss for the quarter. In different regions, marine sales in North America fell 51.5% while European sales were 49.9% down for the quarter.

Yamaha forecasts company wide sales to be down by 22% for its fiscal year ending December 31, 2009. It also expects to report a net loss of 42.0bn (49 million GBP) for the year.
